Ranney School Launches the T. Thomas Fortune Merit Scholarship for Black Students

Ranney School is proud to launch the T. Thomas Fortune Merit Scholarship, a program designed to recognize incoming 9th grade Black students for their outstanding academic achievement with a full, four-year merit award for Upper School (grades 9 through 12). Students must also demonstrate financial need for a full scholarship. This particular scholarship was developed to ensure that Black students with high academic potential but without the financial means to afford a Ranney education could access the vast resources our school offers to inspire students to reach their full potential. This new scholarship is just one component of the Ranney Scholars academic merit program, which recognizes rising 9th grade students of all backgrounds for their academic achievement with awards, applied to their tuition at Ranney, ranging from $2,500 up to full merit awards. The T. Thomas Fortune Scholarship was inspired by a generous Ranney family committed to social justice and systemic change.
The scholarship is named in honor of Timothy Thomas Fortune, an American civil rights leader and writer in the late 19th and early 20th Century. Ranney is also proud to partner with the T. Thomas Fortune Foundation and Cultural Center in Red Bank to spread the word about this opportunity. The T. Thomas Fortune Foundation is led by Co-Chairs Gilda Rogers and Kerwin Webb.
“We are proud of our school’s diversity—our families encompass a broad spectrum of cultures, races, religious backgrounds, nationalities, family structures, and socio-economic backgrounds; however, we are committed to expanding our connections with communities of color to invite families to consider Ranney for their children,” said Dr. John Griffith, Head of Ranney School.
Understanding that tuition at Ranney is a significant investment, the school offers flexible payment plans as well as academic merit scholarships and need-based financial aid. In addition to academic merit scholarships, Ranney awarded $1.8 million in need-based financial aid to 17% of its students for the 2020-21 school year. Ranney offers a range of need-based financial aid awards and has made intentional increases in its financial aid budget over the past five years.
Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are critical facets of Ranney’s strategic plan. Ranney’s Board Diversity Committee is chaired by Ranney alumnus and Trustee Dr. Walter Greason ’91, a prominent historian, educator, and urbanist (@worldprofessor). Ranney is incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Greason’s deep expertise in social justice guide and inspire its efforts to effect systemic change within Ranney—from hiring practices and student recruitment efforts to meaningful academic and student life programs. 
“T. Thomas Fortune offered a vision of excellence and achievement in 1901 that foreshadowed Russell Ranney’s achievements after 1960,” said Greason. “Dr. John Griffith and Gilda Rogers and Kerwin Webb’s alignment of these two legacies offers an inspirational vision of the twenty-first century for a new generation.”
Ranney also has a Student Diversity Leadership Council that coordinates student diversity clubs and initiatives. Ranney’s Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Angelina Howard, spearheads DEI programming and professional development at Ranney and also oversees faculty and student groups focused on DEI.
Ranney School inspires its diverse community of students to strive to reach their full potential. Ranney offers a rigorous course of study and curricula that is innovative and flexible. Small classes and nurturing faculty teams offer a balance of challenge and support guided by the needs of each individual student. With myriad student-life programs, students are encouraged to pursue not just one, but many interests while at Ranney School. Throughout Upper School, students are guided by a dedicated College Counselor as well as an academic advisor.
