In science, the first grade students explored sounds made by different kinds of instruments using string, paper, and a ruler. Through experimenting with different objects it allowed them to make the connection between vibrations and sound. As a final project to end the unit, every student planned and created their own rainstick using a paper roll, brass fasteners, paper tissue, and other decorative materials.
In music class we discussed how rainsticks are used in some cultures and countries to invoke rain to water the crops. We watched an example of a Navajo rain dance. Students turned their rainsticks slowly to simulate rain, then danced using them as shakers.
Our mission is to know and value every child, nurturing intellectual curiosity and confidence, and inspiring students to lead honorably, think creatively, and contribute meaningfully to society.
