Lower School Performing Arts Students Visit the Symphony
On Tuesday, February 27 Lower School Band, Orchestra, and Chorus students travelled to the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, NJ for a New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Link Up Concert "The Orchestra Sings." This is an interactive, curricular program from Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute for students in grades three through five. (
carnegiehall.org/LinkUp) Ranney students prepared for this experience during ensemble classes using the given curriculum.
The orchestra introduced and demonstrated the instruments by families (String, Brass, Woodwind, Percussion). Students listened to the orchestra perform a movement from Antonin Dvorak’s “New World” Symphony and the Finale from The Firebird Suite by Igor Stravinsky. They sang along with the “Ode to Joy” chorus from Ludwig van Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, “Come to Play” by Tomas Cabaniss, “Ram Tori Maya” by Reena Esmail, and “We Shall Not Be Moved” arranged by Nathalie Joachim. The audience sang and participated with choreography to Jim Papoulis’s “Oye”.
Thank you to Mrs. Geene, Mr. Propper, and Dr. Sobieski for organizing and preparing students for this valuable and unique experience. Our Lower School Performing Arts students represented Ranney School well and enjoyed sharing this musical performance with students from other schools.
