What makes the college process at Ranney unique?
We focus on the journey, not just the destination. Our college counseling team of three full-time counselors and one part-time counselor, works closely with students and families to find a school that is academically, personally, and socially the best fit for them. Our students work one-on-one with a primary counselor, but also have access to our entire team - all of whom have previous college admission experience. Ranney has the lowest counselor-to-student ratios of any school in the area, and this gives our students an advantage in terms of personal attention.
Can you share any success metrics on how last year went?
Over 80% of our seniors enrolled at one of their top two college choices.
What are some words of wisdom that you give to students and parents as they navigate the process?
The college application experience can be overwhelming and stressful at times. Focus your energy on what you can control, not on what you can’t!
What advice would you offer to current Middle School students to prepare for their future?
Try new things and follow your passions! Middle School is an excellent time for students to explore various interests in and out of the classroom, helping them build confidence and paving the way for deeper involvement in high school. Remember that college admission evaluations focus on a student’s academic and extracurricular achievements starting from 9th grade, so now is an excellent time to explore and discover!
As parents, supporting your child towards their academic and personal growth go hand in hand. Here are a few suggestions:
Encourage them to step out of their comfort zone by trying something new like joining a new sport, participating in a school club, or trying a new instrument.
Provide support in developing essential soft academic skills, such as organization and time management. Mastering these skills early helps reduce stress and improves their ability to balance responsibilities effectively.
Help students cultivate personal habits that contribute to long-term success. Establishing regular reading routines fosters a love for learning and builds critical thinking skills. Encourage them to explore a range of genres, from fiction to biographies, to expand their perspectives.
Emphasize the importance of practical life skills that nurture independence and accountability. Teach students how to contribute to household responsibilities, such as managing chores like doing laundry, preparing simple meals, or cleaning common areas. If possible, encourage them to take on small jobs, like dog-walking, babysitting, or mowing lawns, to earn their own money. These experiences instill a sense of responsibility and accountability, along with teaching them the value of hard work and time management.
By focusing on these foundational skills, you will help equip your child with the tools they need to thrive academically, personally, and socially, ultimately setting them up for greater independence and success in high school and beyond.
