Nature of Mind Club Introduces Philosophical Installation
Jeremy Li ‘26 founded the Nature of Mind Club this year. For the first session, he spent two weeks researching an experiment and creating an installation to share with other Upper School students.
The Mary's Room thought experiment: a philosophical experiment that explores the relationship between physical knowledge and experience.
The basis of “Mary the Colour Scientist” is also known as the knowledge argument. It was first proposed as a philosophical experiment by Frank Jackson. The premise of the experiment is that Mary is a scientist who lives in a black and white world and has never seen color. She has learned everything there is to know about color and all of its properties, but has never experienced it. The question is, once Mary is physically introduced to color, if she will gain new knowledge from seeing it.
Jeremy said that his two main goals for the Nature of Mind Club are 1) to have fun, and 2) to bring the study of the mind of consciousness to the Ranney community.
“I hope to inspire more of my peers to pursue the study of the mind in the future (in whatever way it may be),” said Jeremy.
