First Grade Students Embark on Polar Pals ColLABoratory Project
The colLABoratory is a dedicated time for Lower Schoolers to engage in interdisciplinary STEAM projects. A great example of this collaboration across disciplines is the Polar Pal Project in first grade. Students were teamed up across homerooms and assigned either penguins, narwhals, polar bears, or walruses.
In Science class with Mrs. Rucci, the students conducted a lab with polymer science to create fake snow to use in their dioramas.
In Ms. Casey’s Visual Arts class, the students made their animals out of clay as well as painted the backgrounds of the dioramas as the habitats.
In Library class with Mr. Steele and French teacher Madame Terrasson, the students research their polar animals using the digital tool PebbleGo. They created posters featuring information in both English and French.
In Robotics class, first grade students made a model of their animals using 3D pens with Mrs. Mitreuter.
Students learned songs and dances in Music class with Mrs. Geene to incorporate music and movement as well as reinforcing facts about the animals. They learned the songs “Paw Paw Polar Bear”, “I’m A Penguin”, “Walrus Song”, and “Narwhals are Awesome”.
At the end of the projects, the students work on their public speaking skills by presenting their dioramas and the information they learned to teachers, administrators, and peers.
