Orchestra Hosts Anthony Dennis '14 in "Guests of the Orchestra" Series
On Monday, May 11, Anthony Dennis ’14 virtually visited Dr. Dorothy Sobieski’s class as part of the "Guests of the Orchestra" series.
Anthony graduated from Oberlin College in 2018 with a degree in Composition for Film. Since the orchestra is working this quarter on music by John Williams - "Star Wars: Episode II "Attack of the Clones" – it was fitting to invite Anthony, whose passion for composition is channeled towards scoring film music.
Anthony was a lifer at Ranney and played the violin in the Middle and Upper School Orchestra. During his tenure at Ranney he also worked on several arrangements of a variety of music which at the time we performed in class. He shared with the class his experience at Oberlin - classes he took, how he decided to choose his major, and mentors he had. He also spoke about the process of composing for a film, which was very insightful and interesting for our students. Anthony's website includes recordings of his movie scores, in particular the 2019 Official Selection of the Oregon Short Film Festival - his score for "Katie.”
“It’s wonderful to see how the orchestra has developed,” said Anthony. “What was during my time at Ranney an extracurricular activity of a few students here and there who happened to have an opening in their schedules is now a full blown class of thirty plus students devoted to experiencing the orchestra and all the knowledge and skills that Dr. Sobieski has to offer!”
“His visit brought so many fun memories,” said Dr. Sobieski. “It was truly wonderful to see him!”
