Bharara Family Names New Lower School Library

On Sunday, September 17, Ranney School was proud to unveil the new Bharara Library and Learning Commons. The new space located in Ranney’s Lower School complex features multiple, flexible spaces designed to serve our youngest learners from age three through 5th grade. The 2,000 square foot library includes areas to collaborate, write, and research, as well as soft spaces for cozy read-alouds and a podcast booth in an old-fashioned English phone booth. 
 
The project was made possible through the generous philanthropic support of the Bharara family, who have been a part of the Ranney community for 46 years. Past parents Dr. Jagdish and Mrs. Desh Bharara brought their sons, Preet and Vinit Bharara, to Ranney in Lower School, and the successful brothers graduated from Ranney at the top of the classes of 1986 and 1989, respectively.  Dr. Bharara served as a member of the Board of Trustees while at Ranney. Preet Bharara went on to serve as the United States Attorney to the Southern District of New York and has since been engaged in a number of ventures including hosting the “Stay Tuned with Preet” podcast and authoring Doing Justice: A Prosecutor’s Thoughts on Crime, Punishment, and the Rule of Law as well as a young audience picture book entitled Justice Is…A Guide for Young Truth Seekers. Vinit Bharara co-founded a number of successful entrepreneurial ventures with fellow Ranney classmates Marc Lore ’89 and Lakshman Chandra ’89 including Diapers.com (eventually sold to Amazon) and Mojo, the first-ever licensed sports betting stock market.
 
In a conversation during the dedication ceremony, the Bhararas shared that they wanted to give back to Ranney because they felt the school had provided the foundation for Preet and Vinit’s success, both as they left Ranney to attend Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania for their undergraduate degrees and Columbia Law School, where they each earned a Juris Doctorate, but also as they took on big challenges in their professional careers. 
 
Head of School Dr. Griffith remarked, “The Bharara family’s stories about the importance of early education and the lifelong value of resilience and communication skills all underscore how perfect the space is as a recognition of what the Bharara family has meant to Ranney School. We are honored to have the opportunity to name this space as a lasting legacy for this family, which has contributed so much to our school and the world beyond Hope Road.”
 
New Jersey Senator Vin Gopal, a 2003 graduate of Ranney School, attended the dedication ceremony presenting the family with a proclamation from the Senate recognizing the important contributions of the Bharara family to education at Ranney School. 
 
Ranney’s Head of Lower School, Dr. Pam Long, shares, “Today's libraries are more than just books. From teaching critical literacy skills to promoting entrepreneurship and facilitating our community stories, libraries are community hubs. They connect people to information and connect people to people. The opportunities for our Lower School students to build, create, dream, and connect with others will be endless.”
 
In addition to the Bharara family, the project was made possible by generous support from Ranney parents John Izdebski, Soroosh Anthony and Ileana Torabi, the Ranney School Parents’ Association, along with other Ranney parents and community support of the Ranney Fund.
