Ranney School Dedicates New Campus Greenhouse
On Thursday, September 5, Ranney School dedicated the Zagha Family Greenhouse, a spacious, cedar shake structure that blends natural materials with functional design. The new greenhouse expands Ranney’s outdoor STEAM education and complements its community garden and the Lubin Learning Pavilion.
The project was made possible through the generous philanthropic support of Ranney School parent Alana Zagha, who wanted to honor the memory of her late husband and Ranney alumnus, Douglas Zagha ’96. “When you lose someone like Doug, you feel compelled to create something meaningful, something that embodies what you believe his intentions would be, not just for our children, but for all the children in the Ranney community,” said Alana. “I hope this greenhouse reflects his most cherished qualities: wisdom, curiosity, and above all, the understanding that giving to your community in any way is the greatest honor.”
“We are deeply grateful to Alana for honoring Doug in such a meaningful way,” said Head of School Dr. John Griffith. “This greenhouse will be a year-round learning space, offering students unique, hands-on opportunities to engage with nature. In concert with our beautiful garden and other STEAM spaces and curriculum, the greenhouse will be a place for students to learn by doing.”
The Zagha Family Greenhouse enhances Ranney’s outdoor education, building on the success of its community garden. Faculty now have expanded opportunities to work with students, bringing STEAM to life through experimentation, research, data collection, and irrigation design.
In addition to Alana Zagha, the project was made possible by generous support from Ranney parents Jack and Janet Sanders, along with community support of the project and the Ranney Fund
