Class of 2017 Prepares for Graduation; Announces College Decisions

In just a few weeks, Ranney School’s 82-member Class of 2017 will graduate at the Collins Arena in Lincroft, New Jersey. Thirty-one of the seniors are Ranney Lifers, having attended the school for 10 or more years. Next fall, they will head off to attend some of the most prestigious colleges and universities across the country, including Columbia and Cornell, where they will pursue their individual passions and interests in fields ranging from the visual arts and theatrical production to finance, law, and medicine to robotics and information technology.

New York is the most popular collegiate destination among this group of seniors, with 17 students attending schools such as Fordham and New York University; Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania institutions are not far behind. One of the things that Ranney prides itself on is the individual attention our advisors and college counselors provide each student as they progress through their college search (read our testimonial series featuring Jared Rush and Sam Metzger ). "This year, we were happy to see that while many students chose to enroll at several of the fine institutions in the Northeast, there were also students who looked outside of their home region to experience life in another part of the United States,” says College Office Co-Director Dr. Nick Accrocco. Four soon-to-be graduates plan to matriculate at the University of Miami, for instance, while senior Brendan Wall is venturing across the Atlantic to attend York Saint John University in England. See the full matriculation list below.

Adds Co-Director Andrea Velasquez, “A common thread that unifies the Class of 2017 is their eagerness to experience all that life has to offer. Their interests are varied both in and out of the classroom. This class is committed to service, athletics, citizenship, and creativity as much as they are committed to their academic interests. They want to do it all—and they will."

Sixteen seniors were recently inducted into Ranney’s Cum Laude Society Chapter, which honors the top 20% of each graduating class, and 17 class members proudly exhibited their sculptures, paintings, and photography as part of the annual Senior Art Show. (Their works will be on display in the newly constructed Mann Student Center through the end of the school year). Another seven seniors spent the bulk of their last year at Ranney diving into research to create their Capstone presentations. Students like Emma Welch presented their findings to peers and family members on topics ranging from web-based applications to Brexit.

Two seniors will continue their love for athletics at the Division-I level next year. Olivia Smith will join Bucknell’s Rowing Team and Alexis Redish will compete on Clark University’s Softball Team. Perhaps most unique about this graduating class is its makeup of siblings, featuring two sets of twins and two sets of triplets, including the Biswals, Dobryzinskis, Mahoneys, and Rosses.

From establishing the Girls Who Code Club and Ranney Jazz Band to leading in Harvard Model Congress and Scholastic/Literary Arts, to taking the stage in Pride and Prejudice, to rehabilitating elephants in Thailand and running annual Crop Walks, the Class of 2017 has made its mark on Ranney and the community beyond. “The Class of 2017 has repeatedly impressed me with their incredible talents in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and in the performing and visual arts,” says Senior Class Advisor and History Faculty Member Mark DiGiovanni. “I’m confident that the skills they've honed over the last four years will bring them unbounded success in college and beyond.”

As they pursue the next step in their educational journey, the seniors take with them the advice recently imparted to them by Ranney alums at the 2017 Career Day, as well as a love for lifelong learning, and memories of meaningful relationships built with their teachers and each other.

Says Senior Class President Lucy McGinty, “It's crazy to believe that our time at Ranney is coming to a close. From running through the rain at Frost Valley to walking down the aisle at graduation, we have created memories that will last forever. As I look among my class, I am so proud to see how far we have come, to see everyone committed to the college of their choice and ready to take on their future endeavors. I am so thankful for the friendships I have made over the past four years and can't wait to see where life takes the Class of 2017. I wish all of my classmates the best in the future.”

On May 22, the Class of 2017 will bid farewell in Ranney’s traditional Senior Walk through campus after attending the morning’s Convocation Awards ceremony.
