Robotics Teams Earn Coveted Design Award, #7 World Ranking in Skills & More
Ranney Robotics won the November 6 local VEX competition, coming home with four trophies, including a Skills score that was ranked #7 in the world (the ranking has moved to #13 as of November 29, 2016 due to ongoing competitions). Ranney had 3 of the 27 robots at the competition, and all three advanced to the semifinals. In fact, the final round engaged two Ranney teams against one another (Team M and Team D) before they ultimately defeated a High Tech High team to take home the overall win in conjunction with a team from Cherry Hill High School East and Millburn High School.
Team M not only won the overall competition, but also won a Build Award for their solidly built robot featuring a clean design that incorporated a unique triangular lift, as well as the Skills Challenge with a score of 72. The teams with the top 50 scores at the end of the season automatically qualify for the VEX World competition.
Our J Team won the Design Award—the first design honor Ranney Robotics has achieved to date. This award is given to the team with the best Engineering notebook, which documents the build process step by step through equations, sketches, notes, and more. A person should be able to rebuild the robot by reading the engineering notebook. The team’s notebook was managed by senior Dana Schioppo. “The judges—who are all engineers or engineering students—said that this was the notebook they themselves would most want to use,” said Robotics Program Advisor Chiara Shah.
As a result of this design win, Ranney’s robotics teams have now won every single robotics award that it is possible to win in the state of New Jersey.
- Team D included: Jack Bacher, Andrew Denton, Jacob Guss, and Ryan Lubin
- Team M included: Rylan Foy, Kangqing (Connie) He, and Kevin Yu
- Team J included: Jack DeNicola, Dana Schioppo, Mike Zheng, and Will Zheng
The next competition is December 10 in South Brunswick.
