The Periodic Table Challenge

Eighth-grade science students study, build, mix and reorganze the elements.
Ranney's eighth-grade physical science students recently completed a periodic table challenge. Students worked in teams to build individual element cubes. Using technology, they then researched an element to gather its atomic number, atomic mass, chemical symbol, history and properties. Students glued the data to a self-assembled paper cube.

Once all of the cubes were made, they were mixed in the wrong order. Each class then worked together to build the 3-D periodic table. The fastest class to correctly assemble a 3-D periodic table did so in approximately 8 minutes.

Says teacher Mrs. Betty Williams, “The periodic table challenge is a fun way for students to become familiarized with the elements in the table for a strong foundation in the chemistry unit.”
