Cross Country's Fitzmaurice Qualifies for Meet of Champions

Rankings and personal records won at the NJSIAA Non-Public B Group Championship
Head Varsity Cross Country and Track Coach Nancy King reports from the weekend's races

A chilly, windy day at Holmdel Park is no time to be running personal records and moving on to the Meet of Champions, but that is just what happened for the Ranney harriers.

Shana Fitzmaurice '19 finished 7th overall in the NJSIAA Non-Public B Group Championship, punching her ticket to the Meet of Champions to be held at Holmdel Park on Saturday, November 21.  This is the first time a Ranney Varsity Cross Country runner has ever qualified for the Meet of Champions and marks a special occasion as Shana is a freshman. Shana ran a Holmdel personal record of 21:04. She also has the distinction of having medaled in every Championship or Invitational meet she entered this season. (Update: At the November 21 NJSIAA Meet of Champions, Shana ran the 5K course among New Jersey's best high school cross country runners, finishing 100th in a field of 180. The 14th freshman across the line, Shana finished with a personal Holmdel Park record of  20:43.)

During the Holmdel meet, Mia Glass '19 just missed the pool of non-medalists to reach the MOC, finishing 18th in a personal record of 21:53.  Led by these amazing freshman, the future of girls' cross country at Ranney is bright.  Rounding out Ranney's threesome at Holmdel was Laura Lehrfeld '18, finishing in 34:25.

Kayode Oladeji '19 missed a personal HP record by 8 seconds, finishing the boys race in 19:17 in 46th place. He was followed by Liam Fitzmaurice '17 19:45, Dean Parker '16 21:26, and Jon Kelly '16 21:28. Rounding out the Ranney six were Jackson Croke'19 in a HP personal record of 22:44, and Rohan Sharma '19, with his best time ever, 23:55.

The boys team finished in 16th place out of 21 teams, just 3 places shy of 15th place.  The boys' pack is well positioned for a dynamic fall of 2016.
