Ranney School is pleased to announce two new hires to its Athletic Department: Peter DeNoble, current Head Aquatic Director at Léman Manhattan Prep School in New York, will take over the Aquatic Program and Scott Belford, current Head Coach of Varsity Crew at the Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, will run the Crew Program. Mr. Belford, who is nationally recognized among the rowing community, will also take on the directorship of Ranney’s Summer Camp.
“Peter and Scott both bring a wealth of experience to our faculty, staff and athletic department,” says Athletic Director Bobby Malone. “Having former athletes on the coaching staff is an advantage for our student athletes, and Peter and Scott bring that added level to our program, including college coaching experience. They not only understand what it takes to compete in college, but they also both know the ins and outs of how the recruiting and college acceptance game works.”
Mr. DeNoble will begin his term at Ranney at the end of June 2015 as the Summer Program Aquatics Director and Mr. Belford will be a part-time coach of the crew team this spring, taking over full time for the fall 2015 season; he has already begun preparations for Ranney’s Summer 2015 Camp programs. See additional bio details below.
Crew
Scott Belford has served as the Varsity Crew Head Coach at Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) since 2005. At CBA, he has been responsible for leading a 60-plus member team to state as well as regional, national and North American championship regattas. During his tenure, priority boats have had a record of 756-66 at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta and the 2013 squad qualified for the Grand Finals of the Stotesbury Cup in all three Varsity 4s, becoming the first team in 25 years to do so. In addition to two Stotesbury Cup Championships and three Scholastic National Championships, his team has had more than a dozen wins at New Jersey state and Philadelphia City championships.
“Scott brings not only a regional reputation to Ranney, but also a national one,” says Head of School Dr. Griffith. “We are more than excited for the future of our rowing team given his proven ability to build and lead winning teams.”
Prior to CBA, Mr. Belford was a master coach at the nation’s most prestigious high school summer rowing camp—the Northeast Rowing Center in Maine—and coached several collegiate rowing teams, including at the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton (earning Grand Final appearances at the Eastern Sprints and NCAA National Championships) and the College of William & Mary. Under his leadership, William & Mary’s team had its most successful record in school history, in 1999.
At the international level, Mr. Belford has coached the US Junior National Team at the West Windsor Caspersen Rowing Center—ultimately serving as head coach for the US Junior Men’s-2 2009 and 2010 World Championships in France and the Czech Republic as well as the assistant coach for the US Junior Men’s-8 World Champion.
In addition, he managed the US Rowing Women’s National Team Development Camp at the Vesper Boat Club on the Philadelphia Schuylkill River leading the team to five national championships, including the 1999 US Rowing Club National Championship at Syracuse.
An athlete himself, Mr. Belford rowed for Rutgers University, serving as captain and earning the university’s Frank Cahill Memorial Rowing Trophy. He graduated from Rutgers with a B.A. in economics.
In addition to crew, Mr. Belford will also be taking over the reins of Ranney’s Summer Camp (www.ranneyschool.org/summerprograms), which brings close to 500 children from across Monmouth and Ocean Counties to campus for eight weeks each summer to experience swim and sports instruction, science and nature activities, arts and crafts, music, drama, day trips and more. He will direct the camp beginning this summer.
