Upper School Celebrates High Achievement at Honors Convocation

The Upper School celebrated student achievements at its annual Honors Convocation and Senior Award Ceremony on May 23, where 32 students who embody the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership and character were inducted into the Russell G. Ranney chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). Members of the Class of 2014 were also honored with Senior Departmental Awards, while select Upper School students received Citizenship Awards and RSPA Panther Prize Awards.

In his opening remarks, Head of School Dr. John Griffith said, “We have to nurture a love for learning. We have to foster initiative, adaptability, flexibilities and commonalities—those are the things that we value as an academic institution. This morning we honor students who stand as an emblem of the love of questions, the love of learning, and most importantly, the love of their companions and their journey.”

NHS Advisor and Visual Arts Chair Kate Greenberg also addressed the RSPA Panther Hall audience—filled with students, family, friends, faculty and administrators—and invited the NHS officers to the stage to begin the traditional induction ceremony.

NHS President Elise Birde [Rumson], Mostafa Meleis (Vice President) [Holmdel], Briana Richardson (Treasurer) [Freehold] and Steven Jacobson (Secretary) [Colts Neck] led the induction ceremony. Each NHS officer lit a candle that represented the four pillars of NHS before the 32 inductees—all members of the Class of 2015—were introduced on stage, where they received their NHS certificate, honor cord, membership pin and card from their chosen faculty mentors.
