Ranney World Language Students Earn National Honors

World Language students have received national recognition for their excellent performance on the 2014 National French and National Spanish exams.

In the French secondary level contest, which spans from grades 8-12, students earned 13 medals and 47 Certificates of Honor. One student placed 2nd in the state of New Jersey and 5th nationally, and another student placed 4th in both New Jersey and nationally. Over 40% of Ranney’s French students placed in the top 20 at both the state and country level. In the French elementary division, all of our fifth-grade students ranked in the top 20 in the nation!

The annual French exam, known as the Le Grand Concours (National French Contest), is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Students of French in grades 1-12, in all 50 states and abroad, take a written test and compete against students with similar educational backgrounds for prizes. Students in grades 1-6 participate in the Foreign Language in Elementary Schools contest while students in grades 7-12 participate in the Secondary Contest. With more than 97,000 United States students participating in 2014, the French National Contest is the largest exam in the nation administered each year to students in grades 1-12.

In the Spanish language, Ranney students in grades 8-12 earned two gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals, along with 38 honorable mentions. “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 154,000 students participating in 2014.” The Spanish exam, administered annually to students in grades 6-12, is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

Ranney students have a long history of high achievement on both World Language exams. Students will be honored with medals and certificates at upcoming assemblies.

Congratulations also to Ranney’s French teachers: Isabelle Daly, Marianne Moran, Maggie Reiter, and Nancy Rosenthal; and Spanish teachers: Heidi Bonney (chair), Marcia Hernandez, Ina Gurman, Megan McGeehan and Maggie Reiter.
