Update Jan. 13, 2014: Two Ranney robots won the third official New Jersey VEX Robotics Competition of the 2013-2014 season this past weekend. The competition, hosted by Ranney, brought more than 20 teams from schools around the state to our Tinton Falls campus. The two winning robots were led by Junior Raymond Moser and Sophomore Brandon Gioggia.
A third Ranney robot, led by sophomore Vasilios Nicholas, and assisted by sophomore Zach Sullens (Holmdel) won an Amaze Award. “The Amaze Award is presented to a team that has built a competition robot that clearly demonstrates overall quality. A solid mechanical design along with demonstrated robot programming, robustness, strong performance and consistency are key attributes assessed for this award.”
A total of six robots from Ranney School competed in the event, including those of our new ninth-grade teams. All told, about 24 of the 41 members of the Ranney Robotics Club were present in some capacity on January 11. There was a large contingent of students manning our concessions booth, including Avani Bhatnagar (Treasurer), Samantha Chiarello (Treasurer), Ava Papetti (Secretary), Noah Goldstien, Daniel Blumenkratz, Kylie Medlin, Sabrina Park, Kiran Shah, Chip Johnson and parent Sunish Shah (father of robotics student Kiran Shah and husband of robotics advisor Chiara Shah). All concessions were donated by various parents and the proceeds will go toward a much-needed Robotics petty cash fund as well as robot parts. In addition to the robotics team members noted below, other students in attendance included: Kyle Lubin, Kevin Xia, Benjamin Iglesia, Jack Fink and Sid Sharma.
Parents who assisted in hosting the event included June Moser and Trish Gioggia. Also present was parent Ray Moser, the robotics team engineering mentor.

Come to campus and cheer for the Panthers this Saturday, January 11, 2014, as our award-winning Upper School Robotics Club hosts a regional VEX Robotics Competition. Taking place in RSPA Panther Hall, the event will feature 20 competing teams from schools around the state. Teams that meet certain criteria during the event will be qualified to attend the State Championship on February 22 in Cherry Hill.
The competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., to be followed by the quarter-final and semi-final rounds at approximately 2 p.m., and the Awards Ceremony at 4 p.m. The Upper School students will have five robots on the field, including a new robot built by our freshmen girls’ team that will enter competition for the first time. Two of the competing robots have already won awards and qualified for the VEX Robotics New Jersey State Championship (see back story on the
November 2013 regional competition).
Qualifying for the state Championship is the first step toward qualifying for the World Competition, which will be held in April 2014 in Anaheim, California. Twelve Upper School students, including team leaders Raymond Moser, Brandon Gioggia, Amy Winkler and Vasilios Nicholas qualified for a trip to Anaheim last spring to compete in the 2013 global championship. See the back story on the
2013 Championship. There are three more events taking place in January and February which students will participate in before heading to the state championships.
