Jacquie Lee of Colts Neck “stunned” the coaches with her rendition of “I Put a Spell on You” on NBC’s “The Voice” Tuesday, according to People magazine.
Here’s the kicker: She did so even though she’s battling illness.
“Nobody mentioned it on the show, but she wasn’t feeling well,” said her dad, Richard Lee. “I was talking to her before the performance and she couldn’t say anything without coughing.”
Yet, the 16-year-old Lee delivered the wattage in a soulful and sensational rendition of the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins classic. It was a show-stopper: Coach Christina Aguilera stood and the audience cheered while host Carson Daly tried to rein in the excitement near the show’s conclusion.
“I’m honored to be your coach,” Aguilera said.
Though it might be a foregone conclusion, audiences will learn if Lee advances in the show tonight at 8.
While Jacquie Lee and her mother, Denise, were in California for the live performance Tuesday night, her father, brother, Richie, and about 300 family, friends and fans were watching at MJ’s Buttonwood Manor in Matawan.
“My wife told me they went absolutely crazy after they signed off,” Lee said. “The place went absolutely bananas.”
Voting concluded 11 a.m. Wednesday. Fans could either call, text, vote on NBC.com or register a vote by purchasing Lee’s song via iTunes. Lee’s rendition of “I Put a Spell on You” was ranked 20 on the iTunes singles chart as voting concluded on Wednesday, while competitor Caroline Pennell of Saddle River came in at 14.
“It’s something they love and enjoy, and it’s touching people on top of that,” Rich Lee said. “(Judge) Adam Levine said that (Jacquie’s) the cutest thing he ever saw and maybe it’s true — I’m prejudiced because I’m her father — but she is a phenomenal kid.”
GO TEAM JACQUIE !
