Ranney School Celebrates Homecoming Weekend

Ranney School launched the celebration of its annual Homecoming weekend with a school-wide pep rally on September 20. During the rally, students cheered as coaches and players from each fall sports team were introduced, along with the Ranney Panther mascot who joined in on the fun. Physical education teacher Brian Dolan served as the master of ceremonies for the rally, leading students in cheers and friendly competitions. Following the pep rally, the Varsity Boys’ Soccer team kicked off the weekend of competition, defeating Henry Hudson at home with plenty of Panther fans in attendance.

On September 21, the games continued throughout campus with the Middle School Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer (Blue) Teams defeating Rutgers Prep. Varsity Girls’ Field Hockey attracted fans to their game against Hamilton High School West and won 2-1. Despite their best efforts, Varsity Girls’ Soccer fell to Nottingham High School (Hamilton North) after a hard fought battle. The Ranney community then came together for a Welcome Back Barbeque where Ranney families and friends enjoyed lunch before Fall Festival activities began.

The Ranney School Parents’ Association (RSPA) worked together to transform Ranney’s grounds into a fall wonderland. Pumpkins, scarecrows and stacks of hay decorated the scene while large inflatable rides, a Ranney Idol stage, horse and carriage rides, a petting zoo, pony rides and carnival games entertained children throughout the day. Student volunteers assisted with arts and crafts and even created their very own Haunted House in preparation for the Halloween season. Guests were also able to make their own scarecrows and decorate pumpkins they picked from the pumpkin patch.

RSPA Co-Presidents Kathy Dodge and Tom Gavin assisted students in selling popcorn and running carnival games to benefit the Middle and Upper School classes and Student Council, while other members of RSPA ran the gently-used Halloween costume collection station to benefit Monmouth County’s Family & Children’s Service. RSPA also organized a gently-used uniform sale and collected food for the local nonprofit organization Lunch Break.

That evening, Ranney’s alumni returned to campus for the 2013 Alumni Reunion and Panther Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The former Panthers were able to reconnect with friends and teachers while enjoying refreshments and the Alumni Art Exhibition, organized by Fine Arts Chair Kate Greenberg. This year’s exhibit displayed the works of more recent alum artists varying in a range of disciplines, including fashion design, architecture, product design, drawing, painting and sculpture. Some of the featured artists are currently in art school while others are enrolled in colleges and universities or working as professional artists and architects. Alumni artists included Charlotte Fleming ’12, Julia Bontempo ’11, Peter Bontempo ’13, Kristine Rodriguez ’08, Sarena Rabinowitz ’07, Stephen D’Onofrio ’10, Thomas Hearne ’12, Adam Nickel ’12 and Victor Gainor ’12.

Before the Panther Athletic Hall of Fame Inductions began, Head of School Dr. John W. Griffith welcomed everyone and introduced himself to many alumni for the first time. “One thing we will be focusing on over the next few years is working even harder to bring alumni back to Ranney School,” said Dr. Griffith. “It is critically important to have alumni be connected to each other and for us to serve as a resource for them, while also serving as mentors to each other.”

Established in 2009, the Hall of Fame was created to recognize and honor former Ranney athletes, past and present coaches and other members of the Ranney community that have made a positive contribution to the athletic program. The 2013 inductees were: the 2006 Varsity Girls’ Soccer Team, The family of William Brod, Danyelle Halpern ’04, Laurel Fernandez ’05, Gregory Guidone ’06, J.D. Wilgucki ’07, Wes Powell ’08 and Director of Athletics Tom Moriau. After he inducted the new members into the Hall of Fame, Mr. Moriau received a special tribute from the Athletic Department and his daughter, Jena ’08.
