The 2012-2013 school year was a milestone year for Ranney and its students. To celebrate student achievements, a collection of award and induction ceremonies took place in the Upper School division. On May 23, Ranney held its Honors Convocation, where 27 students who embody the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership and character were inducted into the Russell G. Ranney chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). Members of the Class of 2013 were also honored with Senior Departmental Awards, while select Upper School students received Citizenship Awards and RSPA Panther Prize Awards.
In his opening remarks, Head of School Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff, shared memories and proud moments from the school year and commended the many attributes Ranney students possess beyond academic success. “Real intellectual aptitude is measured by crossing the tracks–exploring the possibilities from many different angles and by participating in many activities that stretch our understudying of how the world works,” he said. “We honor students today who have demonstrated scholarship and character and have devoted substantial amounts of time to activities that support community service and leadership.”
NHS Advisor and Fine Arts Chair Kate Greenberg also addressed the RSPA Panther Hall audience—filled with students, family, friends, faculty and administrators. “You have worked diligently and have achieved great success and it is why we are taking the time to recognize you all here today,” she said.
NHS President Alexandra Seneca ’13, Vice President Erika Serhus ’13, Secretary Veronika Fischer ’13 and Treasurer Rachel Burstiner ’13 led the induction ceremony. Each NHS officer lit a candle that represented the four pillars of NHS before the 27 inductees—all members of the Class of 2014—were introduced on stage, where they received their NHS certificate, honor cord, membership pin and card from their chosen faculty mentors.

Dr. Nicole Martone, a member of the Upper School English faculty, spoke to the students about lifelong learning. As she shared examples of what she learns from her students each school year, Dr. Martone specifically addressed the senior class. “I commend you for your achievements and wish you well as you leave Ranney to pursue your passions. Keep learning, keep reading, keep searching for the answers you don’t know, keep asking why, keep digging deeper, and I promise I will, too.”

On May 28, Ranney celebrated the academic success of its students again at the Honor Societies Induction Ceremony. Instituted by Dr. Sykoff, the academic honor societies were established to recognize students who have excelled academically within one of more disciplines. To earn membership into these nationally affiliated honor societies, students must maintain a high scholastic average in the related coursework while pursuing extracurricular activities that align with that discipline.
Upper School Science Teacher Mrs. Valerie Schwake spoke to the students about the value of their education in her address. “Academic excellence is just one of the many keys to success. And with it carries a sense of responsibility and attitude,” she said. “Responsibility entails doing one’s part thoroughly and promptly as a student, family member, and in the community. Attitude can be manifested through several things—perseverance, respect, kindness, self-discipline and courage.”
After her remarks, Upper School faculty and administrators inducted the following students into their respective societies:
