The Ranney Middle School Swim Team had an incredible 2012-2013 season, finishing with an impressive 11-0 record. This marked the fourth year in a row that the team has gone undefeated, compiling 41 consecutive victories. This year’s team was made up of 26 males and 23 females who competed against schools across the state, from Tinton Falls to Livingston. The team practiced several hours each day, concentrating on conditioning, stroke technique and race tactics. By season’s end, many swimmers achieved individual records.
To conclude the season, Ranney hosted its fifth annual Middle School Invitational Swim Championship on February 12. For this final meet of the year, boys and girls were separated into two divisions. On the boys’ side, Ranney finished in first place to earn their fourth straight title, coming in ahead of Pingry and Wardlaw Hartridge. Ranney swept all three relay events, including the medley (Joe Caputo ’17, Keenan Maher ´17, Matthew Chang ´18, Toby Savage ´18) , 100-meter freestyle (Joe Caputo, Matt Torpey ´17, Liam Fitzmaurice ´17, Matthew Chang), and the 200-meter freestyle (Toby Savage, Myles Fischer ´17, Matthew Torpey, Liam Fitzmaurice). In the 100-meter freestyle relay, the boys lowered the school record by more than a second.
Individually, Fitzmaurice and Maher took first in the 100-meter individual medley and 50-meter breaststroke, respectively, while Caputo and teammate Alec Goldberger ´17 finished first and second in the 50-meter backstroke. Torpey finished second and third in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter freestyle race while Chang earned two seconds in both the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle events. Also earning key points were: Miles Farren ´17 (100-meter individual medley), Bret Silverstein ´17 (50-meter freestyle), Cameron Centrella ’19 (200-meter freestyle), Jack Crilly ´19 (200-meter freestyle), Max Bonevento ’18 (50-meter breaststroke) and Luke Grover ´18 (50-meter Butterfly).
In the girls’ division, Ranney competed hard throughout the tournament, challenging Pingry and Newark Academy. After the breaststroke event, the Panthers were tied at 255 points with Pingry. The final event was the 200-meter freestyle relay. With a crowd of more than 250 fans on their feet cheering, Ranney and Pingry matched each other stroke for stroke. In the end, however, the Pingry team finished a few tenths of a second ahead of Ranney. Overall, the girls’ team accomplished some of its best swims of the year, and many swimmers set personal-best records during the meet.
The 100-meter freestyle relay team (Grace Hofferber ´17, Cali Sabaitis ´18, Taylor Gill ´17, Abby Boyan ´18) won first place, earning 32 points for the team. Boyan also contributed individually with second place finishes in the 100-meter individual medley and 50-meter backstroke. Fellow teammate Sabaitis placed second in the 100-meter freestyle and fourth in the 100-meter individual medley, earning a combined 26 points. Hofferber came in second in the 25-meter freestyle and third in the 50-meter freestyle, while Gill came in fifth in the both the 50-meter freestyle and 50-meter butterfly. Isabella Arege ´18 came from behind to pick up an important third-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle.
Other key contributors on the girls’ side included: Jill Ross ´17 (50-meter breaststroke), Grace Cornell ´17 (50-meter butterfly), Taylor Rice ´19 (200-meter freestyle), Sophia Salvador ´19 (50-meter breaststroke), Laura Lehrfeld ´18 (50-meter breaststroke), Lindsay Maher ´19 (25-meter freestyle), Aidan Denver Moore ´17 (50-meter backstroke), Katie Juhase ´18 (100-meter freestyle), Shana Fitzmaurice ´19 (200-meter freestyle), Jenna Banks ´19 (25-meter freestyle), Julia Wolf ´19 (200-meter freestyle) and Olivia Pasquale ´19 (50-meter breaststroke).
