Ranney Middle School Presents: Fiddler on the Roof Jr.

Filled with passion and humor, Ranney’s Middle School production of Fiddler on the Roof Jr. is a special edition of one of Broadway’s classics. The musical, directed by Ranney School’s Musical Theatre Director Lillianne Torrente, is based on the book by Joseph Stein and will feature original music by Jerry Bock with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick.

The story takes place in Anatevka, a small Jewish settlement in Russia, where a poor dairyman named Tevye (Taylor Zenner ‘17) tries to instill the traditions of his tight-knit community in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia in his five daughters: Tzeitel (Madison Chamas ‘18), Hodel (Evan Schultz ‘17), Chava (Leigh Brandt ‘17), Sphrintze (Samantha Riebesell ‘19) and Bielke (Lexie Greenberg ‘19).

In Act I, the audience is introduced to Tevye and his five daughters, along with his wife, Golde (Abby Granata ‘18), and the village matchmaker Yente (Jackie Erler ‘18). When Yente approaches Golde about arranging a marriage for her eldest daughter, Tzeitel, the three oldest sisters wonder whether the Matchmaker will find them the men of their dreams (“Matchmaker”). Despite Tzeitel’s love for Motel the tailor (Carmine Mastrokostas ‘18), Tevye has already agreed to match a wealthy butcher named Lazar Wolf (Jared Cohen ‘18) with his eldest. After she expresses her feelings to her father, he cannot help but agree to allow Tzeitel to marry Motel, but is fearful of what Golde, Yente and the people of Anatevka will think.

Will Tzeitel and Motel live happily ever after? Will the rest of Tevye’s daughters find their true love? And what is the fate of Tevye, Anatevka and the villagers as they are forced to leave due to the pogrom? Find out this weekend as the Middle School presents Fiddler on the Roof Jr.
