The Middle School hosted its ninth annual Forensics Festival on Saturday, April 28, 2012. Joining Ranney’s Middle School Forensics team in RSPA Panther Hall and the Commons Black Box Theater were competitors from five local schools including Oak Hill Academy, St. Gerome of Long Branch, Ocean Township, St. Veronica’s and Villa Victoria Academy. What resulted were 19 total awards acquired by Ranney students.
Throughout the festival, students representing each school went head-to-head for first in categories spanning humorous interpretation of literature and dramatic interpretation of literature to storytelling and dramatic pairs. Ranney’s students were prepared for competition by Middle School Forensics Director Nancy Wade, who was assisted by drama teacher John Doyle, English teacher Allison Reddington, music teacher Lilly Torrente, and social studies teacher Amelia Caverly.
There to judge the yearly event were professionals from such area theaters and theater education programs as the Two River Theater, the New Jersey Repertory Company, the New Jersey Storytellers’ Association, the Merry-Go-Round Players, the Premier Theater Company, the Young Playwrights’ Theater, and Love Creek Productions. With a wide range of expertise, judges are expected to not only critique student performances, but also offer valuable guidelines for enhancing forensics skills. After the festival, students may receive written comments from as many as five judges, making the day a true learning experience for all competitors.
For years, Ranney School has distinguished itself in forensics by earning numerous
awards for excellent performances, and this spring was no exception.
