Alexandra & Joseph Sciortino Serve As Headmasters for a Day – April 27

Friday, April 27 proved very special for two lucky Kindergarteners – twin siblings Joseph & Alexandra Sciortino – who acted as official Headmaster and Headmistress for the day. Just last year, Joseph and Alexandra learned that their parents, Dr. Joseph and Mrs. Vivian Sciortino, had been named one of two lucky winners in the 2011 Panther Ball Gala’s “Headmaster for a Day” raffle. An experience, which each has eagerly anticipated since Pre-K, the day exceeded far beyond their expectations.
Friday, April 27 proved very special for two lucky Kindergarteners – twin siblings Joseph & Alexandra Sciortino – who acted as official Headmaster and Headmistress for the day. For one day only, Joseph and Alexandra migrated from classroom to Headmaster’s Suite where they were granted the opportunity to make big decisions, meet new people and create memories to last a lifetime.

As Headmaster and Headmistress, both Joseph and Alexandra were first chauffeured across campus by golf cart. Upon reaching their destination — the Headmaster’s Suite — the twins became acquainted with what would temporarily become their office, complete with large wooden desk, comfy leather chair and, best of all, candy dispenser. While according to Joseph, his favorite part about being Headmaster was having an M&M candy machine in his office, he admitted that he would rather swap out the M&Ms for Kit-Kats; Alexandra, for Reese’s® Pieces.

After practicing a few golf strokes and receiving several special gifts including personalized Ranney jackets and blazers, notebooks/notepads, plaques and business cards, Joseph and Alexandra then took a tour of the Upper and Middle School with Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D. During their tour, Ranney’s new Headmasters introduced themselves to members of the College Guidance Office, Middle School Dean of Students David Ketcham, and various Upper classmen. In addition, they brushed up on their math skills — calculating how many years until they too will become seniors (13) — with Mr. Piccirillo, and learned the laws of electricity with Mr. Gance.

Not only did Headmasters Joseph and Alexandra have the pleasure of declaring a Lower School dress-down day, but they also created the April 27th lunch menu consisting of Joseph’s favorite, ravioli and garlic bread, and Alexandra’s favorite, chicken wings. To top it all off, both requested that lunch include an ice cream sundae bar as well. If only possible, other changes Joseph and Alexandra said they would make to the school if they were Headmaster every day were as follows: 10 extra weeks off throughout the school year, an earlier snack and lunchtime, the addition of a bouncy house to Mrs. Atwood’s Kindergarten class and the inclusion of swing sets — one million swings to be exact — at the Lower School playground.

Following the perfect lunch and some time with their parents inside their very own office, the Headmasters later attended a pizza party as well as movie showing of “Eloise at the Plaza” with friends in the Distance Learning Center (DLC). In addition, their day culminated with VIP seating at Ranney’s Lower School musical performance, Annie, Jr.

Although becoming Headmaster and Headmistress for one day was certainly fun, Joseph said he still has hopes of eventually becoming a doctor just like his father. Meanwhile, Alexandra’s love of she and her brother’s two bunnies, Isabelle and Oreo, has her wishing to someday become a veterinarian. If Joseph and Alexandra’s success as Headmaster and Headmistress for the day is any indication, the two definitely have a bright future ahead of them.
