Ranney Seniors Accepted to Nation’s Most Competitive Colleges

Pull up a chair at the desk of Ranney’s College Guidance Office, as its new series, From the Desk of College Guidance, takes an in-depth look through the eyes of Ranney’s very own college counselors and out into the ever-changing world of college admissions. This informative series will include articles on such topics as the Ranney college guidance process, specialized schools, the value of community service and more.
From the Desk of College Guidance–A Ranney School College Guidance Series
Ranney Seniors Accepted to Nation’s Most Competitive Colleges
The longstanding tradition of academic excellence continues as 100% of Ranney School seniors will carry on at some of the greatest colleges and universities throughout the United States. These scholars, who have demonstrated phenomenal success throughout their Upper School careers, are now well on their way to becoming leaders of the future.

Of the 62 students in this year’s graduating class, 77% percent were accepted to institutions ranked “Most Competitive” or “Highly Competitive” — meaning among the nation’s most selective colleges or universities — by Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges. This school year alone, 13% of seniors were accepted at Ivy League institutions ranging from Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University and Dartmouth College (3) to Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania (2) and Princeton University.

Historically, 80% of Ranney seniors earn acceptance to their first or second ranked college or university, and this year’s senior class is on track to continue this high level of achievement. Throughout their Upper School years at Ranney, the College Guidance Office works closely with students and their families to find those schools whose criteria perfectly match one’s individual goals or expectations. After clearly identifying their perfect fit school, many students may choose to apply either Early Decision (ED) or Early Action (EA). Of those 90% of Ranney students who applied ED or EA this school year, an impressive 91% were admitted. Please read more about Early Decision/Early Action as part of our College Guidance Series: "Tackling Trends in Early Decision."

Perhaps one contributing factor to such successful admittance rates is that, in 2012, Ranney’s seniors scored nearly four hundred points higher than the national average on their SAT exams. From academics to athletics, however, six scholar-athletes representing the Class of 2012 were also chosen to play intercollegiate athletics at Carnegie Mellon (swimming), Harvard University (rowing), Brandeis University, Columbia University, New York University and Stevens Institute of Technology (men’s fencing). To put this into perspective, the national average high school students going on to play intercollegiate sports is 3.5% - at Ranney the number has soared to 8-10% of students.

The College Guidance Office was also responsible for advising numerous seniors demonstrating a keen interest in several specialty schools who place emphasis on the Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Business and Engineering. From the more than two dozen specialty school acceptances had by students this year, colleges attended by the graduating class will include the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Columbia University. A complete list of acceptances includes:

With final decisions to be made in the up and coming weeks, the Class of 2012 has shown tremendous promise. Thus far, Ranney seniors are gaining admittance to selective four-year colleges at a 2:1 and 3:1 rate, way above the national average admitted to those same schools. We invite you to learn more about Ranney’s unique college admissions process, led by the College Guidance Office, through our College Guidance Series.
