Anxiously awaiting the arrival of a June 17th Commencement Ceremony, the senior class of 2011 finished out the last semester of its Ranney journey with the completion of several community service projects during a Senior Service Week in May.
Fifty-six seniors along with faculty members and administrators Head of School Paul Zanowski, Director of Academic Affairs Bob Bowman, Fine Arts Chair Kate Greenberg and Dean of College Guidance Joseph Tweed headed to Pinebrook Park and Hockhoxen Road for a Tinton Falls cleanup project. Following a long day of sun, sweat and fun, Ranney’s community service advocates celebrated the good deed with a luncheon hosted by Head of School Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff at Rooney’s Oceanfront Restaurant in Long Branch. They also cooled down with some ice cream from Strollo’s — complements of Dr. Sykoff.
Well-rested and ready for more, the seniors performed one of four projects during a Local Senior Day of Service the next morning. The first project of choice entailed a cleanup at Camp Oakhurst. A summer program available to children and adults with physical disabilities, 16 seniors and Mr. Tweed traveled to the Oakhurst, New Jersey site to help prepare for the 2011 summer camp season.
Meanwhile, 22 seniors and class advisor Daniel Lippiello participated in a gardening project at Stevenson Park with Impact OASIS (Ongoing Autistic Success in Society)—an organization that focuses on the dream of creating farmstead communities for autistic adults to live and work on. Impact OASIS has worked closely with local, county and state agencies to fund the purchase of farmland since 2007. Farmland acquired includes seven acres at Stevenson Park, which is leased to Impact OASIS by Middletown Township for farming, gardening and horticultural purposes. Along with other non-disabled peers, individuals with autism and their families, Ranney School seniors aided in the managing of this year’s crop of vegetables and flowers.
Having had more than their fair share of sun during the Tinton Falls cleanup project, several seniors chose to perform their second service project indoors. While 10 graduates volunteered at the LunchBreak Soup Kitchen in Red Bank with Director of College Guidance Myra Simpson, eight others completed an on-campus art project under supervision of Ms. Greenberg in the Upper Head of School’s office. At Mr. Zanowski’s request, the seniors worked for several days on a fireplace mural complete with Ranney memorabilia and student flair.
A great end to a very busy Service Week, the program culminated with a Senior Transition Day. A means of preparing students for the move from high school to college, the Transition Day included a “Five Changes for College” presentation by renowned speaker
Mike Weber, a “Making it Count!” assembly in the Distance Learning Center and a “Library Research at Your College” class led by Librarian Deborah Fanslow. In recognition of all their hard work during the week and throughout their time spent at Ranney, the day concluded with an exclusive Senior Farewell assembly in RSPA Panther Hall and an ever-popular Senior March to the Crescent with students, faculty members and administrators offering their thanks and congratulations to the graduating class.
