Middle and Upper School Divisions Compete in Regional Science Olympiad Tournament

Students from Ranney’s Middle and Upper School divisions attended the Union County College Regional Science Olympiad Tournament on January 11, 2011, resulting in several earned medals.

For the past 27 years, Science Olympiad has led a revolution in science education, providing approximately 6,000 teams from schools throughout the nation the opportunity to explore new and exciting interests that enrich both educational and social experiences. During the day-long event hosted at Union County College, students from Ranney took part in a premier science competition consisting of rigorous, standards-based challenges.

As a result, the Middle School’s Science Olympiad team, comprised of 21 students and advisors Betty Williams and Christopher Meharg, took 8th in Regional Division ‘B’ of the tournament. Most noteworthy throughout the competition were Raymond Moser ’15 and Jerome Cohen ’16, who placed 2nd during a trial event known as Helicopters. Meanwhile, both Audrey Effenberger ’15 with David Paasche ’15, and Dean Parker ’16 with Adrienne Yang ’15 took 4th in their Ecology 2 and Meteorology 2 categories.

Now in its third year competing with Science Olympiad, the Upper School team led by advisors Valerie Schwake and Brian Daly also saw a fine performance at Tuesday’s event, earning a total of six medals for Ranney. While Christopher Schwake ’12 earned two medals for his team in both the Epidemiology (Epi) Challenge and Microbe Mission, teammates Philip Allen ’12, Eric Chiang ’12, Zachary Elkwood ’11 and Sam Tkach ’12 all earned one medal each as well.

Although Ranney’s Upper School team did not qualify for the Science Olympiad’s State Tournament, the Middle School team was invited to represent Ranney at the State Finals Tournament on Tuesday, March 15, 2011. The Tournament will be held at Middlesex County College in Edison.

Congratulations to all Ranney School students who attended and participated in the Regional round of Science Olympiad and congratulations to the Middle School team for qualifying for the next round of competition!
