Members of Upper School Band, Chorus, and Flute Ensemble traveled to Annapolis Maryland April 24 through 26 to attend the Heritage Music Festival, a nationally recognized music competition for high school performing ensembles. This is the third year the Upper School has attended the festival, and their first overnight trip. The groups have traveled in the past to New York and to Philadelphia, but this year wanted to expand their trip.

As a result of the competition, the Girls’ Ensemble was awarded a silver medal for their performance of three choral numbers of diverse musical styles. They were adjudicated by a panel of judges comprised of music professors and nationally-known choral conductors. The Ranney Jazz Band and Flute Ensemble participated for comments only and were awarded a plaque to recognize their achievements at the festival.

Other festival activities included listening to a symphonic performance of the United States Marine Band. One of the most exciting aspects was that two Ranney students, Hannah Goldstein, on flute, and Jonathan Rosenthal, on trumpet, were invited to play with the band.

Students also toured Annapolis and learned about the colonial history of the town. They also visited the Naval Academy campus and even had the chance to see our alumni, John Gale and Wes Powell. They are doing well!

Overall, the weekend was a great success. The students had the opportunity to socialize at a lovely restaurant, enjoy a top-notch performance from the U.S. Naval Band, and to play their own music at two beautiful venues—Annapolis High School and Annapolis Area Christian School.

To top off the weekend, students and chaperones attended a dinner dance on Saturday night, sponsored by the Heritage Festival Company and held at the Renaissance Hotel at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in Baltimore. All of the festival-goers danced the night away to a great live jazz band.
