Ranney Team Finishes in Top 5% in Global Bloomberg Challenge

The Ranney Upper School team competing in the 2024 Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge, recorded impressive results out of thousands of graduate school, undergraduate, and (a very small number of) high school competitors.

In the 2024 Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge, teams of three to five students competed against other top students around the world to experience firsthand what real-world investing looks and feels like. Teams used the Bloomberg Terminals to define market assumptions, develop a return-generating strategy, and execute trades within a closed network. The winning team recorded the highest time weighted relative return, relative to the Bloomberg World Large, Mid & Small Cap Price Return Index (WLS Index).

George Dohrenwend ‘26, Valentina Cariola ‘26, Alexander Lennon ‘26, and Jonah Brustein ’26 finished in the top 5% globally.  They managed over 16% returns from October 11th to November 15th while the S&P 500 (despite a massive post-election bump) ended slightly less than 1% higher during that exact same time period.

“This is excellent work for a group of high-schoolers and they should be commended on their impressive results,” said co-advisor and faculty member Chris Buckley.

Ranney introduced the Finance Lab with 12 Bloomberg terminals—the same technology used by banks and corporations worldwide–last fall. Ranney is one of only a handful of independent schools providing students access to Bloomberg Terminals and the range of learning opportunities they offer. The lab is home to a new finance course, which introduces students to the principles of finance and the world of Wall Street through case studies and real-world examples, as well as an advanced course. The school has developed a Business and Financial Studies Certificate program to parallel two current offerings: a STEAM and a Global Studies Certificate. Within a robust and rigorous liberal arts curriculum, these programs allow students to specialize in areas of particular interest.

Students have the opportunity to attain certifications offered by Bloomberg in market concepts, ESG (environmental, social, and governance investing), and finance fundamentals. The terminals are also an asset to other classes including economics, government, computer science, and mathematics.

“Many members of our alumni and parent community work in the fields of finance, banking, portfolio management, and entrepreneurship,” said Head of School, Dr. John Griffith. “The new lab has given us the opportunity to bring these experts to campus to engage with our students as they explore college majors and consider career paths. The lab is a great resource for student clubs, capstone projects, our immersive Maymester program, and workshops, and gives our students an advantage in applications to highly competitive business or finance programs. The experiential learning and enrichment opportunities for our students and alumni are truly incredible.”
